Taking Care of Friends and Family? Here’s an easy tool!

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. -Galations 6:2

I’m at the age when a lot of my friends are having babies. In our small groups and Bible studies, we’ve taken part in signing up to bring meals to the new baby’s family, although I know that other meals ministries do the same for medical emergencies, elderly care or other needs.

Whatever the reason, I have a great tool that you can use to organize your caretaking. It’s called Care Calendar, and it’s a free service to make taking care of others easier. It is family-run by the Bortels, and was started when husband Dave realized he needed help to take care of his 9 children (!!) when his wife had emergency surgery. I only recently found out about it when my Bible study leader started using it for our group.

If you’re the coordinator, you just sign up, entering in the information and needs for the family or individual who will be served. You’ll be given a login ID and password to share with prospective helpers, who can then sign in, and sign up for their day/time to help out.

As a helper, you have access to the family’s address, phone number, any allergies or dislikes, and you can also see what the other helpers are bringing for meals so as not to double up. The service even sends you a reminder email, which is a big help.

It’s an easy way to set-up an organized plan for helping others out, and I hope it simplifies the way you serve your family and friends! You can click to watch a demo of Care Calendar if you like, and download my yummy recipe below!

As a bonus for you, gentle readers, here’s my favorite recipe to prepare for sharing with another family. I love it because I can cook it in the crock pot all day, and it’s fun to deliver with its separate “condiments.”

VoilĂ … my very easy chicken-tortilla-soup.

What’s your favorite recipe to deliver to others? Or, what’s the best meal that someone brought you?

I like to bring Enchilada casserole, you prepare it a day ahead (to let the juices soak into the tortillas) so that way I can work on the other aspects of their meal the day of. I ALWAYS include a dessert because that was my favorite part of receiving meals when I had my kids. I still remember the warm dutch apple pie we were given! Yum:)
