Today’s Moondoggie’s birthday so I picked a simple tool…
I feel like these are under-rated in our modern kitchen, but I’ve found mine lately to be invaluable in order to make a salad quicker, and stop wasting paper towels in the process. To what could I be referring?
It’s the Lettuce Spinner!!
This particular spinner was a hand-me-down from my grandma, and it sat unused in my cupboard for a few years before I realized how awesome it was. My main detterence to not using it was that it was a large item that would have to be washed.
However, because prepping lettuce for salad is my least favorite thing to do in the kitchen, I decided to give it a go. And guess what! It’s totally worth it! I just quickly rinse my lettuce, toss it in the spinner, spin the heck out of it, and voilĂ ! No wasting a million paper towels that quickly get soaked to dry my lettuce.
Like I said, mine’s a “vintage” model (complete with crack in handle), but there are plenty of modern versions available, too, for those of you who didn’t bother registering for one (probably because they seemed useless and outdated!), like me.
Williams Sonoma has 2 by OXO: this one and a one that’s a bit pricier.
Target has a few, including this Zyliss model.
I’m sure I would love Pampered Chef’s version, too!
Does anyone else love their lettuce spinner?

I have that same lettuce spinner, in blue!
I also have a newer one but part of it is missing.
Love lettuce spinners!
We have one always in use. You can store the washed lettuce in the fridge inside the spinner. Just make sure to empty out the excess water before placing in fridge. That way you have ready-washed lettuce without buying it in the bag.
Do not get the Ikea salad spinner. I bought it and it just does not do a good job. I ended up buying another one from Crate and Barrel and love it. I would spend a little more to get something a little more substantial.
I love my salad spinner! It is also a task the little ones in the kitchen can help with. For a loooooooong time.
I think I got mine at Target, the OXO one. It’s a bummer that it is so big, but it’s usefulness allows it to survive in my cramped cupboard.
I, too, have stored washed lettuce in it. I also have been known to use the base as the salad bowl.
Yea for Pampered Chef
You’re supposed to wash your lettuce before eating it?
Just kidding! My mom gave me her old tupperware spinner, and it got lost somewhere over the years. I loved it!
we have this here in italy… seriously I never knew it was around till I moved here and it’s amazing!
I’m so glad there are more lettuce spinners out there! Let’s (or should I say “let us” ~ that joke doesn’t get old to me!) make them popular again!
