This week was a big week in the life of our kitchen. We got floors and countertops!
We now have engineered wood floors, and new tunas green granite counters.
We were able to get the contractors rate for the floor, and save quite a lot of money that way. There are more inexpensive options (laminate, thinner wood veneer etc.) but for the look we wanted we got the right price. It also only took a day, which was well worth it with a toddler.
We also got a good deal on our granite, and while we did not buy a leftover slab (which is a cheap way to get granite for as little as $4 sq ft) we did get a very good deal on the granite by shopping around (we found if for half the price we were originally quoted). We now have about half a slab of granite left over - not sure what we are going to do with it yet!
Our big frugal adventure this week has been tiles – I knew the look I liked (white subway tile), and knew I wanted an accent of mosaic tile (because using all mosaic would have been too busy and too expensive!), but finding the right tile was a challenge.
My husband and I walked up and down State College Blvd in Anaheim (the tile mecca of Orange County) and stopped in each store until we found tile tile I had been dreaming of. It is Jade Mosaic tile made by Dune (and Australian company – totally not planned). We are in the process of getting the best price we can. And the white subway tile – free, leftover from a job a friend did.
So, things are coming together, we still have crown moulding to put up in the kitchen, baseboards to go down, backsplash to be tiled and plumbing to be done… and then I think we can call it done!
Next week: Photos of our completed kitchen (I hope!)
